Bus Passes, Get On the Next One

We sell Metro Transit (MTC) bus & light-rail passes. Here's what they look like and what they do. These are called "Stored Value Cards" because they have value stored on them. It's like an electronic punch card that diminishes each time you pay for fare on the bus. We sell the $10, $20, and $40 varieties. For every ten dollars you spend on a card, you get one dollar free (hence the "$40" card has $44 on it). After your value runs out, you throw the card into the garbage can. THESE ARE FOR THE BUS ONLY. They do not work on trains. If your trip begins on the bus, you may ask the driver for a separate transfer for the train. You can also use the Stored Value Cards to pay for multiple riders, to whom the driver will issue separate transfers.

This here's a "Go-To Card." It enables a transit rider to board very quickly, because you just touch it to a magic panel to pay your fare. At the train station, this magic panel is a free-standing little box that you utilize before you board the train. The ones we sell are $175, and are for MCAD students only. They are good for UNLIMITED rides for one semester; in this case, 1 January to 31 May 2010.

As of this posting, fare is $1.75 and $2.25 for rush-hour. So you would only have to ride the bus once every other day (during rush hour) to make the card worth the price. COOL!

*NOTE: These GO-TO cards differ from the ones available to the general public, which you can order online for $5.00 and add as much value as you want via credit card. You can also buy the cards in person at Metro Transit stores (the one in Minneapolis is at 719 Marquette Avenue downtown). Once you have it, you can add value online or in person at a light-rail station.

MCAD staff can buy some kind of bus pass through the Human Resources office.

NEW Papers & Sketchbooks

We now carry some unique and exciting products from Borden & Riley Paper Co, out of Queens, New York. The first two are unlike anything else on the market. Please read on.

DENRIL is the name of a transparent polyethylene vellum. It is similar to the Grafix Matte Drafting Film, but much cheaper. We sell single 19 x 24" sheets for $1.25. Unlike paper vellums, it does not tear. Denril is great for drawing on, and not only for tracing. It takes ink and paint nicely, and we have even heard ballpoint pen looks great on it. You can work on both sides for experimental effects!

Paris Paper for Pens is another unique product, which we sell in 14 x 17", 40-sheet pads for $14.50. This is a heavy, 108 lb. paper with a smooth, hard surface which does not bleed or feather when using fine pen nibs. Indeed there is no better surface for Crow Quill-type inking. Consider it an alternative to Bristol for any pen & ink work.

The Normandy sketch pad features warm cream-toned paper designed to stand up to repeated erasings. 11 x 14", 70 lb. paper, 50 sheets, $6.05.

This dashing Spaniard graces the cover of our large 18 x 24" Rag Drawing pad. "Rag" is paperspeak for cotton, from which printmaking papers such as Arches and Rives are made. A fine and pH-neutral drawing surface. Twenty-five sheets, $21.50.

The Royal Sketch pad is spiral bound and 9 x 12". The paper is heavy weight 90 lb., with a hot-press surface on one side, and cold-press on the other. Recommended for wet or dry media. Sixty sheets for $15.25.

Also from Borden & Riley, we now carry 20-yard rolls of GLASSINE, in 36" and 60" widths, $12.20 and $20.25, respectively.

NEW Canson Recycled Bristol Pads

If you stand very quietly in the sketchbook aisle, you may catch a glimpse of our new line of bristol pads, Canson's XL series. They are kind of hard to spot, nesting on the bottom shelf across the aisle from the rest of the bristol. These are the only recycled bristol pads on the market. The other unique feature is that each sheet is vellum-textured on one side, and smooth on the other. Radical! At 96lb, the weight is similar to the Strathmore Windpower series. There are 25 sheets per pad.

Price breakdown:
9 x 12" -- Retail price: $7.99, Our price: $4.80
11 x 14" -- Retail price: $10.99, Our price: $6.60
14 x 17" -- Retail price: $16.99, Our price: $10.20

We are proud to offer these new pads that are made without destroying virgin forests, and still adhere to the high quality standards Canson has had for over 500 years. Don't take our word for it, come in and try some for yourself.

Not Your Average College Book Store

Those who pay attention will notice that the prices on most items at the Art Cellar are significantly lower than at other stores. This is especially noticeable with paint brushes, which we sell for 50% below suggested retail price. We price Golden and Gamblin paints 40% below retail. These companies do not allow their items to cost any less.
For example, a large (150ml) tube of Gamblin artist-grade titanium white oil paint retails for $26.95. Our price is $16.20.
We are able to do this because, like MCAD itself, the Art Cellar is non-profit. Unlike any other art store, we do not have to directly pay rent or employees with our profits. Instead, the money you spend here goes back into the college to fund things like scholarships.

Textbooks, too, are generally 20% below cover price, and other books 10%. The only things we are unable to discount are photographic and digital media supplies. You will save money on these items by buying them at stores like Walgreens or Target, who are able to order them by the millions to get a discounted rate.

You will save significant money on your art supplies at the Cellar. And the convenience of shopping on campus may be worth the small difference in price on certain media. In addition, by buying at the Art Cellar, you are not fattening some CEO's pocketbook; you're funding your friends' scholarships. And maybe even your own.

New Papers!

You printmakers may have noticed a dramatic change in quality  in Stonehenge papers. For one thing, it is no longer smooth, although the company denies that a change took place. Hmmm...

Anyway, we got rid of that. (Buy what's left on our sale shelf!)

Replacing Stonehenge is the new Canson "Edition" series, which is very similar to the old Stonehenge. (Better?) Same weight, nice texture, more colors, and... LOWER PRICE! (Wasn't Stonehenge the cheapest anyway?)

Canson's been making paper since 1557, and Edition is made from 100% cotton, like Stonehenge. Come feel some for yourself.

For those keeping score, here's what we have:

What would a blog be without ideas for "going green"?

We've got some great "green" items for sale, and maybe you had no idea.

They fall under the categories of Painting, Illustration, Office Supplies, and "Other".

It's a neutral grey color!
Thin, 500 ml: $3.95 (MSRP: $5.87)
Thick, 500 ml: $6.00 (MSRP: $8.95)

Eco-House Painting Media
From up in Canada.
CoZICa Metallic Drier Blend (like cobalt drier but less toxic)

4 oz: $7.85
32 oz: $30.45

"Green" Drawing Pens
I bet a lot of you illustrators love Microns and Staedtler Pigment Liners and throw 'em away all the time. Well, hey, quit that.

Instead, pick up a few COPIC Multiliner SP drawing pens. They have smooth metal barrels, they're refillable, and the tips are replaceable! Jeepers, huh?
They retail for $8.95, but no, we sell them for $6.30.
So worth it!

"Green" Office Supplies
We sell several items from Sustainable Group, who makes the world’s only line of binders certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Their products are assembled by a Seattle-based, disabled workforce, and are made from post-consumer recycled (and recyclable) materials. They are all nice & plain, kraft paper and stiff cardboard. Check out their website; you can order stuff custom printed.

Right now we carry:
3-ring binders (with replaceable covers! $4.95 to $14.95)

Three deep gemtones available: red, blue, and-- of course-- green.
