We sell Metro Transit (MTC) bus & light-rail passes. Here's what they look like and what they do. These are called "Stored Value Cards" because they have value stored on them. It's like an electronic punch card that diminishes each time you pay for fare on the bus. We sell the $10, $20, and $40 varieties. For every ten dollars you spend on a card, you get one dollar free (hence the "$40" card has $44 on it). After your value runs out, you throw the card into the garbage can. THESE ARE FOR THE BUS ONLY. They do not work on trains. If your trip begins on the bus, you may ask the driver for a separate transfer for the train. You can also use the Stored Value Cards to pay for multiple riders, to whom the driver will issue separate transfers.
This here's a "Go-To Card." It enables a transit rider to board very quickly, because you just touch it to a magic panel to pay your fare. At the train station, this magic panel is a free-standing little box that you utilize before you board the train. The ones we sell are $175, and are for MCAD students only. They are good for UNLIMITED rides for one semester; in this case, 1 January to 31 May 2010.
As of this posting, fare is $1.75 and $2.25 for rush-hour. So you would only have to ride the bus once every other day (during rush hour) to make the card worth the price. COOL!
*NOTE: These GO-TO cards differ from the ones available to the general public, which you can order online for $5.00 and add as much value as you want via credit card. You can also buy the cards in person at Metro Transit stores (the one in Minneapolis is at 719 Marquette Avenue downtown). Once you have it, you can add value online or in person at a light-rail station.
MCAD staff can buy some kind of bus pass through the Human Resources office.
